A proper diet can have a tremendous impact on your health and performance.  Wrestlers train hard and need to ensure that they are consuming a well balanced diet to ensure peak performance.  You train hard in the gym – educate yourself on how you can make improvements in your eating habits to enhance how you feel and perform.

 Hello Marietta Wrestling fans!
Nov 20, 2013 – Welcome to the 2013 season!  Tonight we opened up the varsity season against Pebblebrook at home.  It was an overwhelming defeat of the Falcons with the varisty running up a 75-0 score.  Personally, I don’t ever remember attending a Marietta wrestling match with that high margin of victory.  With 14 weight classes, the most possible points is 14 x 6= 84 points which takes everyone pinning their opponent.  Tonight, we had 8 pins, 4 forfeits, one decision and neither team fielded a 106.  So, of the 78 possible points, we scored 75 of them.  Pretty impressive.

Just prior the varsity match, the two JV wrestlers that Pebblebrook fielded were defeated in succession by Aymar Whitsett and Earl McKinney.  Aymar wrestled a tough gal and defeated her 10-3.  Earl wrestled well and scored a 7-0 decision.
Captains for the match were Brad King, Jonathan Gates, Isaiah Borne and Brandon Hill.  We began wrestling at 182 lbs with Dalton Brans getting one of 4 forfeits of the night.  Next up, Andres McClesh (195) and Isaiah Borne (225) both had 1st period pins.  Isaiah, a State Qualifier from last year with an impressive record, had the tougher of the two matches and worked hard to score his pin.  Brandon Hill, one of our returning region champions at 285 lbs got a forfeit finishing out the heavy weights.

Neither team fielded a 106 and Jason Caldwell got the forfeit at 113 lbs.  Next up was Jelani Miller who battled fiercely at 120lbs. He rode his opponent out at the end of the match and scored the 7-5 decision.   At 126 lbs Abraham Leon scored the last forfeit of the night.  Brad King, another Region Champion, was up next at 132 lbs and scored the fastest pin of the night taking 14 seconds to pin his Falcon.   Following Brad was Caleb Evans at 138 lbs who took only 1 minute longer to pin his opponent.  Then Kevin Ojiagbaje got his first MHS varsity pin late in the first period.

As the points continue to roll up, Alex Ambio our 152 lb Devil took the mat and in just over a minute he pinned his opponent in a very methodical, python like fashion.  Watch out for this guy; he will bring home some hardware this season!  Max Boose at 160lbs, had little difficulty with his opponent scoring another 1st period pin.  At 170lbs Jonathan Gates finished out the match by running up the score and almost scoring a technical fall before pinning his man late in the 2nd period.

Go Blue Devils!

The MHS Blue Devils kicked off the 2013-14 season by finishing in 1st place in the Walton JV tournament.  Congratulations to the following wresters for placing:

 120- Jelani Miller-1st place
         Lisa Neary-3rd place
 126-Alberto Castillo-2nd place
        Darnell Powell-4th place

        Earl McKinney-3rd place
 145-Kevin Ojagbaje-3rd place
        Kendew Flowers-4th place
 160-Mitchell Smith-2nd place
        Max Boose-3rd place

        Innis Shannon-4th place
 220-Saloum Nije-2nd place

Congratulations to Marietta’s Lawton Ward for winning the 2013 6A State Championship at 170 lbs!!

February 16, 2013 – Lawton Ward capped off a terrific season by winning the 170 lb State Championship in Macon, GA.  Lawton defeated Lambert’s Joey Salgado with a 1st round pin to start the tournament.  In the second round, he squared off against Najee Bank’s of Chattahoochee HS and secured a 7-3 victory.
In the semi-final match, Lawton faced Eliot Lee of Archer HS.  With an early lead, Lawton seemed to have the match in hand.  However, Lee closed the gap and forced the bout into overtime.  Lawton scored an impressive takedown and launched himself into the championship!

In the final, Lawton faced a familiar opponent, Brady Sandercock of Cherokee HS.  These two had faced off earlier in the season, with Lawton prevailing in a very close and hard fought match.  This time, Lawton maintained control throughout and secured the win by a score of 7-4.
Video of the all of the 6A Championship round matches is available here:

Congatulations Lawton on your well deserved title!!  The Blue Devil Wrestling team, coaches, parents and fans are all extemely proud of you!!
February 9th, 2013 – Sectional Tournament was held at Kennesaw Mtn HS and the results were impressive.  We took 10 wrestlers into the tournament from Area and are advancing 6 to the state tournament.  That is awesome.  Congratulations to all the young men and Coaches! Details as follows:
CHAMP!  Lawton Ward took the field by storm and claimed the 170lb title.  With a 1st round lengthy match that eventually left the Collins Hill wrestler defaulting due to injury and pins in both the quarterfinals AND semi-finals, Lawton headed into the finals with a lot of mat cred.  He was challenged in the final, but built up a strong lead and wrestled smart to earn the crown with a 10-9 victory.    Lawton is healthy and wrestling well as he heads into the state tournament with a nice position in the bracket.  Excitement is an understatement, but, Lawton, everyone will love you and support you no matter what happens this weekend.  We are so proud to have you on our team and representing MHS as such an exemplary student athlete.
We had 5 other wrestlers place 5th, 6th or 7th.   There are two sectionals (East and West) with top 8 in each tournament going on to state this weekend.
Brad King (126) finished 6th.  As Area 4 champion, he faced Area 7’s #4 finisher, but lost this first round match mainly due to some mental mistakes.   However, he rebounded and won three straight matches in the wrestle backs before falling in the consolation semis to the eventual 3rd place finisher.  He then faced a good, but beatable Peachtree Ridge kid for 5th place.  He was down 6-1, but came back to tie the match at 7pts in regulation and went into OT.  In sudden death 1st OT Brad had a great shot, but got a little loose in the finish and his opponent made a successful last ditch maneuver to not only deny the takedown, but reverse position and score first – securing his victory.   It was a tough way to end the tournament for Brad, but he will bounce back.   State tournament as a sophomore is a great achievement, but he has the ability to secure a medal!  Go get ‘em!
Shomari Holmes (138) – Finished 7th – Shomari had a tough draw first round and lost to the eventual 3rd place finisher.  He also rebounded quickly and got his two wins to secure a ticket to the state tournament.   His second win was a real thriller as he secured it in OT with a 4-2 win.   He then dominated in the 7th place match with a 12-4 major decision.   Shomari has impressed many of us greatly at times this year.  With his strong showing and finish at Sectionals, he could surprise some people and end up with a medal at the end.
Jonathan Gates (160)- Finished 7th – Jonathan had a very exciting tournament that could easily have found him wrestling in the semi-finals Saturday morning as he lost a very close quarterfinals match.  He then came back strong and beat a talented Roswell Hornet in OT to face the eventual 3rd place finisher losing only 2-6.   He ended very strong with a pin for the 7th place spot.  Jonathan, if you wrestle smart and win a few more close matches, you should come home with a medal!
Isaiah Borne (195) – Finished 5th – Isaiah got the pleasure of wrestling the beast from Etowah and Area Champion and favorite to win state, Mavric Rechsteiner .   He tried hard, but with a monster throw, our man was off to the consolation bracket.  At that point, he kicked serious butt.  Isaiah plowed through three straight opponents before losing a close match in the consolation semis.  He then recovered and won a nail biter 8-7 for fifth place.    Isaiah is the reigning Cobb County Champion which tells you he is a force to be reckoned with.  Anything could happen in this weight class at state and I would not be surprised to see Isaiah come home with some serious hardware – maybe even gold!
Brandon Hill (220) – Finished 7th –  Brandon had a solid pin in the 1stround, but then ran into a wrestler who, for a change, was about as tall as him.  His trademark underhook was working until they both reached the apex and it was almost a question of which way the magnetic flow was at the moment which way they would fall.  Unfortunately, Brandon wound up on bottom and it was off to consolation for him too. After a solid win over Peachtree Ridge (and earning a ticket to state) he lost a tough match to McEachern.   However, he fought back and helped avenge Isaiah’s loss by pinning an Etowah kid to claim 7thplace.   In the big boy weight class, it is common for upsets to occur, so go for it Brandon.  You too might come home with some impressive hardware!
Trager Kviten (145) finished 9th and is the alternate for the #8 placer.   Trager started his tournament by wrestling and falling in a decision to the eventual #4 placer. He then faced and only lost by 1 point to the eventual 3rdplace finisher in a real heartbreaking match.   With only a 1 point close finish separating 3rd and 8th place, this weight class defines parity.  It was really tough to see Trager not make the main draw at State his senior year by such a slim margin.  But, keep the faith Trager.  Injuries do happen and people do show up and not make weight.   You may indeed get one last chance to make your mark.  We all hope so!
Good luck and make us all proud down in Macon!
Jason Caldwell (only a freshman) and Jordan Marion-Plaines (a senior) lost in the 1st round and then both won their first match in the consolation bracket, but then lost again and were eliminated from the tournament and unfortunately neither were able to secure the alternate position.  Dalton Brans, a sophomore, who wrestled many pounds above his weight, did not secure a place either and unfortunately his season ended also.    These three wrestlers were truly valuable members of this team and just getting to the sectional tournament is a great accomplishment for any wrestler in this part of the state.   Congrats to you all for a fine season.
February 2, 2013 – Well, as the season crescendos to the final tournaments of the year,  it is do or die time on the mat.   The Area 4 AAAAAA tournament was held at North Cobb.  We were short our 120 lb wrestler, so we only had 13 guys to compete as a team, but I do have some really great news to share.  We qualified 10 of our 13 wrestlers for the Sectional tournament this coming weekend at Kennesaw Mountain.  That is a huge accomplishment and was better than either of the two teams that finished above us at the tournament, Kenn Mtn and Hillgrove.   Kenn Mtn was the Region winner and Hillgrove was close behind.  We were a scant 11 points back which was definitely within striking distance.  Had we had a few more victories and pins, this 2013 MHS team could have easily been team area champions.   Here are the individual results:
Area Champions:  Brad King (126) – Seeded 4th, Brad defeated the #1 seed in the semis (and avenged a loss at Cobb County) and then defeated the #2 seeded McEachern wrestler 12-5 in the finals to claim his first Area Championship.    All his matches were real battles where strategy, will to win, conditioning and skill all had to be there.
Lawton Ward (170) – Lawton lived up to his #1 seed and captured his THIRD consecutive Area Title. He defeated Rene Gutierrez for the third time this season (Area Duals and Blue Devil Brawl) in a tight battle that could be the state title bout that never seems to end.   Lawton was gracious in victory and was quoted in the MDJ “I won this medal, but it goes to my team.  I am proud to represent Marietta and get the gold.”  We could not be happier to have him speak for MHS!
Brandon Hill (220) – Brandon, who was seeded #2, is peaking at the right time and seems to be getting better and better every match.  He defeated quality opponents, all of whom are seniors, I might add, from Campbell (Pin), McEachern and in the final, Hillgrove, to claim his first Area Championship.
We had no runner-up finishers since all three of our finalist won.  We did have four 3rdplacers:
Jason Caldwell (106) – He lost in the first round to a finalist, but battled back through the consolation bracket to face Christy Powell, a senior and seasoned veteran from Hillgrove, and defeated this great gal grappler soundly to claim third place.  Super Job Jason!
Jordan Marion-Plaines (132) – Suffered a last second loss in the first round that was truly heartbreaking.   We were all so proud that he was able to come back from that to wrestle extremely well and put an exclamation point on his day with a pin in the consolation finals!  Great Job Jordan!
Trager Kviten (145) – Without KMHS, Trager might have won this tourney, but he came up a little short on beating this guy and it put him in the consolation bracket.  However, he remained focused and kept his head high and fought for a last second granby roll escape victory in the consolation finals!  Very Exciting to see!
Jonathan Gates (160) – He lost 2nd round, but fought back hard by pinning his next opponent to reach the consolation finals where he defeated a talented Kenn Mtn wrestler (with a pin!) to take 3rd
Rounding out the Sectional Qualifiers by finishing fourth were:
Shomari Holmes (138), Dalton Brans (182) and Isaiah Bourne (195).  Each one of these guys had some great things happen at this tournament.   In short, placing forth in this region is a major accomplishment!  If you doubt it, just ask the 5 guys from each weight class that had their season end on Saturday.  Shomari had a pin and only lost his last match 2-4.  He wrestled very hard.   Dalton is always impressive wrestling opponents that sometimes outweigh him by more than 15 lbs, and it showed when he won the JV tournament in his actual weight class (170) earlier this season.  Isaiah lost a heartbreaker in the semis 1-2 and then sprained his ankle in the consolation final and had to forfeit.  Hopefully he will be OK for Sectionals.
We had 2 wrestlers place 5th, as alternates for Sectionals:  Alex Ambio (152) and Jeron Holsey (285.) They earned these spots by defeating 2 opponents each and each had a pin for the day, which added to the total team points.
January 26, 2013 – Marietta Middle School had their season ending tournament Friday and Saturday, split between both “A” and “B” groups to enhance competition.
Friday night,  the B-Team wrestled like they have never wrestled before. Placers from the B Tournament are:
Lisa Neary , Kirran Franklin, Wakil Byron all finished in 2ndPlace.
Adriana Arias finished 3rd.
Darrell Haynes, Ian Finney and Nyjaquan Reddick all finished 4th.
Saturday night, our A Team knew that they would have some tough matches, and they lived up to the challenge. Places from the A Tournament were:
Reggie Kimani – 2nd Place, Tyrik Edwards-Hambright 4th and Cameron Hill 5th Place. And, John London and Jacoby McMillan finished in 6th place.
Overall, great season. We are also very proud of the MMS wrestlers and their achievements.   These tournaments are very tough with kids from all over the metro area – some with very large and established junior programs.  Great job!
MHS hosted the Blue Devil Brawl on Saturday with multiple very strong teams attending including many time State Champion Collins Hill.  Our team wrestled very well and we had multiple champions and a lot of wrestlers place.  Some very exciting matches for sure.  Lawton won 6-4 in Overtime in what might be a preview of the state final against Guiterez from KMHS.  Jordan made a huge comeback by getting a late 3rd period reversal and putting his man on his back (5 point move) to win 7-5. And, lastly with the whole arena watching the last matches of the tournament, Brandon Hill won 6-5 in the 3rd Overtime and Jeron Holsey won a true big man type match 7-5.
Champions:   Jeron Holsey, Brandon Hill, Lawton Ward and Isaiah Borne.
Runner Ups:  Brad King, Alex Ambio and Jonathan Gates
Third Placers:  Dalton Brans, Jordan Marion-Plaines.
Fourth Placers:  Jason Caldwell, Shomari Holmes and Trager Kviten.
As a team, MHS finished Runner up to Collins Hill.  Great job to every wrestler who competed and every other wrestler/parent/support person that helped put the event together.  Thanks very much!
January 19, 2013 – Cobb County Tournament 2013 is in the books.   It lived up to expectations with many intense, high caliber matches.  I can’t even count all the overtime matches with at least two into quadruple OT.   With 5A powerhouse Pope (as well as other lower classification schools) at the tourney, it is one of the few times many of the 6A teams have a chance to wrestle these kids.   For example, the 152lb final between Harrison’s Anthony Fiacco (state placer) and Pope’s Jake Henson (2012 state champ) as well as 126lb final between Pope’s Tyler Haskin and Hillgrove’s Cameron Westerman would be likely state final matches if Pope wrestled in 6A classification.
Our Devils wrestled hard, but we did not make any headlines.   However, we must remember we are young and gaining experience in every match.  That being said, there are some real accomplishments that should be noted.  Again, remember this is a tournament with every worthy Cobb County based wrestler competing.   They give out medals to the top 6 places, which like the State Tournament, is demonstrative of the level of competition.
Medalist/placers:  Isaiah Borne – (2nd), Brandon Hill (4th), Jonathan Gates (4th) ,Trager Kviten and Brad King placed 6th.  Congratulations to all the wrestlers, coaches and managers/sports med folks for manning up at a high level.    If I was selecting the Blue Devil MVP, it would have to be Jonathan Gates.  He was not seeded in the top 6, pinned his first opponent to make the quarterfinals and then met the #1 seed, Pope’s Billy Meek, the defending State Champion.  Jonathan wrestled him hard for 6 minutes and lost 10-1.  Now, when you lose in the quarterfinals of a large tournament, it is a very arduous path to the consolation finals. With only a few breaks in the action, Jonathan first defeated the McEachern wrestler, then Kennesaw Mountain and to make it into the consolation final he pinned the Lassiter kid with 5 seconds left.  He lost a close match 2-5 vs Harrison in the consolation final and took home the 4th place medal.    Isaiah also deserves great credit for making the final and being a takedown away from tournament champion at the end.  He represented MHS well!
The results of the JV tournament are as follows: We had one champion, Dalton Brans at 170 and both David Crocket and Anthony Neary got 2nd.  Marietta took 4thplace overall!  I had two different people at the varsity tourney tell me they heard Marietta looked really strong at the JV tourney, so I feel confident saying all our kids wrestled hard.  Congratulations everyone!
Wednesday, January 16, 2013 – We wrestled McEachern, which is a natural rival for Marietta, but this match was meaningful for another reason.  At the Region Duals, we upset both Hillgrove and Harrison to face off with Kenn Mt. in the finals.  During the wrestle backs McEachern got beat by Hillgrove.  So, we never wrestled McEachern straight up.  This was a chance for us to show everyone that Marietta going to state was NO fluke.  Lose to them and everyone could have made that case on paper.

Our Devils came through!   Wrestling started at 170 and Lawton delivered 6 pts for us with a second period pin.  Dalton Brans lost a close decision and then Isaiah won a very exciting overtime match scoring a takedown about 20 seconds into OT.  Brandon Hill had a solid decision at 220 and Jeron lost a close decision.  When the lightweights hit the mat, we were up 12-6.  Jason Campbell got a forfeit and then in a shocker, Abraham Leon slipped up and got pinned as did Jelani Miller.   When Brad King came up the team score was tied at 18.  Brad earned a decision 10-9 after giving everyone a heart attack at the end of regulation giving away 4 pts in a close near fall.  Jordan Marion-Plaines won a solid decision 6-4 (close even though he seemed in control the whole way.)  Shomari wrestled one of their better wrestlers and gave up a pin.
We were again tied at 24 all with three matches to go with one of our seniors, Trager Kviten up at 145.  Trager delivered as any departing senior would hope to  – with a very exciting pinfall and put us up 30-24.  Alex Ambio entered the circle with the team meet victory in his control.  If Alex wins – we win as a 9 point lead with one match to go is insurmountable.   Alex not only won, but wrestled a very impressive technical match and got a pin to secure the REAL MHS win.  Jonathan’s match was the last one and he put a great exclamation point on the meet with an 8-2 win.  Final Score – MHS 39-24!  Way to go MARIETTA!!!!!!!
